Events Roundup Here is a partial list of upcoming cultural events in Coral Gables. June 10 – July 1 Laughter has been shown to reduce stress and increase one’s longevity. One can also agree that “laughter is the best medicine” for today’s troubles. The University of Miami’s Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) looks to remedy the current, emotional downturn in society with “Laughter Yoga.” Instructor Christina Farnsworth will present a four-week course which starts today and take place Wednesdays at noon at the Institute, 1550 Brescia Avenue. This series will explore a unique, hands-on approach to yoga. Concepts such as deep breathing combined with the exercise of laughter will be addressed. The goal of the course is to remind individuals to find a way past difficult situations with laughter. Admission for OLLI members is $32 for all four classes or $10 per class. June 13 – 14 The Bamboo Society's Plant Show and Sale will showcase some of the best tropical bamboo from around the world. Learn how to grow bamboo in South Florida from the experts. The event benefits the 144-seat theater, Coral Gables Art Cinema, which will soon open to the public. June 18 Coral Gables Congregational Church continues its 2009 Summer Concert Series with the compelling violinist Anne Akiko Meyers. The young performer came into the national spotlight at the age of 11 when she twice performed on The Tonight Show and appeared with the Los Angeles Philharmonic. Meyers will be playing alongside pianist Reiko Uchida. The performance takes place at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 De Soto Boulevard, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $40 for reserved seating within the first five to eight rows, or $25 for general seating. Marilyn Bruno, Ph.D., J.D. has a lengthy career that involved providing legal council for AARP and serving under the Florida Department of Elder Affairs. Bruno is hosting Weekly Informative Workshops ad will be talking on the very important topic of health care: Medicare /Medicaid programs, including Part C Medigap, Part D prescription drug plans, and free and subsidized prescription drugs. Understanding health care options is important for anyone switching jobs, or in a job with an employee plan that ends upon retirement. The lecture is free and open to the public. June 20 – July 19 GableStage at the Biltmore presents the Southeastern Premiere of The New Century by Paul Rudnick. The comedy shows what happens when a Jewish mother, flamboyant Palm Beach resident and Midwest craftswoman meet for the first time under very surprising circumstances.
