October 8 – November 8

New Theatre presents the world premiere of In Development by David Caudle. During a conference for aspiring playwrights, sex, death and dramaturgy takes center stage. The previous year's conference had dire consequences and this year is poised for the same. Follow the intriguing plot and with all its twists and turns. October 16 & 17

The enchanting story of Jack and the Beanstalk will be performed on stage by the young actors of Miami Childrens Theater. There is a lot of action in this classic tale. Don't miss a second of it. Performances take place in the theater at the Coral Gables Youth Center, 405 University Drive, at 8 p.m. with additional performances on Sundays at 3 p.m. When you buy online, tickets cost $14 for general admission and $12 for children. October 14

Festival Miami presents the Frost Wind Ensemble, at 8 p.m. The critically acclaimed Frost Wind Ensemble will present an exciting evening of music featuring percussionist Svet Stoyanov.  Come see and hear this musically diverse program featuring the best in both winds and percussion performance! October 15

Festival Miami presents Carlos Reyes at 8 p.m. Recording artist, producer, engineer, harpist and violinist, Carlos Reyes has been breaking musical barriers since his first public performance at the age of five. His first album, The Beauty of it All, was on the Top-ten Contemporary Jazz charts in Billboard Magazine for more than 15 weeks. October 16

Calling all witches, ghosts and goblins, Gym Kidz at the Youth Center will be hosting a Glow in the Dark Sleepover. The overnight party at the gym will feature special glow in the dark activities, a scavenger hunt, games and much more. There are half night (6 p.m. – 9 p.m.) and full night (6 p.m. – 8 a.m.) options with the cost ranging from $25 – $40. The Youth Center is located at 405 University Drive. Festival Miami presents “A Time For Love” with Arturo Sandoval at 8 p.m. Grammy winner, jazz trumpeter and pianist Arturo Sandoval is certain to move you — literally! Sandoval, who can burn through an Afro-Cuban groove, tear up a bebop tune, soar over a Mozart concerto and soothe you with a luscious ballad, is the winner of four Grammy awards, six Billboard awards, and an Emmy. It is an evening for true music lovers. Don’t miss out: reserve your seats today! October 17

Books & Books presents a special evening of stories and songs from the legendary Andy Williams at 7 p.m. Williams knew everybody who was anybody during his seven remarkable decades in show business (including Judy Garland, John Huston, Jack Lemmon, John Lennon, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Elvis, and Barbra Streisand, among others) and was a close friend of Bobby Kennedy for many years, and he shares memories of them all in his book Moon River and Me. October 17

The Miami Chapter of the Buoniconti Fund present the Second Annual Block Party, at 201 Miracle Mile from 5 – 9 p.m. Experience a night of great food, cool microbrews and wine, live music, and more, presented by Houston’s of Coral Gables. October 18 – 31

See all the amazing interpretations of what a scarecrow should look like. Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden will have all the entries from its Scarecrow Competition on display around the garden. All the monies collected from entry fees, ballot sales and donations from the contest will benefit Project Restock, a new initiative to improve the quality of Fairchild's lakes and encourage local and migrating birds to visit. You can see the scarecrows during the gardens regular hours, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fairchild Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. October 20

Friends of the Miami-Dade Public Library System invites the public to a Fundraising Event taking place at the Coral Gables branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System. Chef Kathy Manning of the critically acclaimed restaurant Hy Vong will be at the library to give participants a little history and taste of Vietnam. The evening starts at 8:30 p.m. with a free wine tasting. At 9 p.m., Chef Manning will provide samplings of her favorite dishes. It’s a red carpet event for the Relay for Life of Coral Gables kickoff party, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The party takes place at the War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive. October 21 – 31

The University of Miami Ring Theatre presents its production of Hamlet, by William Shakespeare, arguably the greatest play ever written. Don’t miss this riveting theatrical ghost story for Halloween. Performances are held evenings of October 21 – 24 and 28 – 31 at 8 p.m.; andmatinees on October 24, 25 and 31 at 2 p.m. The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre is located at 1312 Miller Drive on the University of Miami’s Coral Gables campus. October 22

A Lincoln Bicentennial Celebration, presented by Books & Books and the Florida Humanities Council, takes place at 7 p.m. In costume, Chautauqua scholar-actors taking the roles of Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass will each speak – then discuss with one another – matters involving race, slavery and other issues of 19th century America, including the relationship of these two great figures in history. October 23

The Coral Gables Police Department is providing senior residents invaluable skills that will help seniors defend themselves if confronted. The department is offering a free Self-defense Class for Seniors which will include hands-on techniques to defend against different situations. October 24 – 25

It's time to plant your garden. If you have questions, the experts at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden have answers. The Edible Garden Festival will have information about how to grow your own garden including herbs and vegetables that do well in the South Florida climate. Visitors can pick up recipes from the culinary demonstrations taught by local chefs using local products. The garden is open 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fairchild Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road. Admission costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children ages 6 – 17. October 24 – November 22

GableStage at the Biltmore presents the first play of the 2009 – 2010 season with the southeastern premiere of Reasons to be Pretty. Don’t miss this edgy and darkly comic love story about the impossibility of love and the subjectivity of beauty. Performances take place on Thursdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 7 p.m.; Fridays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and Saturdays at 8 p.m. GableStage is located in the eastern section of the Biltmore Hotel, 1200 Anastasia Avenue. October 24

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society will hold its first Light the Night Walk to raise funds for blood cancer research and patient services, from 6 – 9 p.m. The event takes place at Merrick Park across from City Hall, 405 Biltmore Way. Hundreds of walkers of all ages are expected to attend and participants will carry illuminated balloons, white for survivors and red for supporters, to honor the lives touched by cancer. October 25

Red Grammer, one of the premier entertainers of children and families in America, is coming to Coral Gables to perform in the concert season of Sunday Afternoons of Music for Children. The musical event BeBop Your Best Halloween Concert is scheduled for 3 p.m. at the Maurice Gusman Concert Hall located at the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami, 1314 Miller Drive. Through November 8

Actors’ Playhouse presents the new pop musical comedy and current off-Broadway sensation, The Marvelous Wonderettes. Featuring favorite songs from the 50s and 60s, this musical takes you to the 1958 Springfield High School prom where we meet the Wonderettes, four girls with hopes and dreams as big as their crinoline skirts. Performances will be held Wednesday through Saturday at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $40, and Friday and Saturday evenings are $48. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discount rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with proper I.D.
