April 29

The Coral Gables branch of the Miami-Dade Public Library System will hold a theater event for children. Actors' Playhouse will present Young King Arthur. A child becomes king but young Kind Arthur soon discovers that with power comes responsibility. The event takes place in the auditorium of the library, 3443 Segovia Street, at 7 p.m. For more information, call 305-442-8706.

The Miami-Dade Public Library System is celebrating the 10th anniversary of the Art of Storytelling, with community-wide events for the entire family. At the Coral Gables branch of the library, the entire family is invited to attend a Storytelling Workshop from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Award-winning storyteller and author Sadarri Saskill and her daughters will share ways to use multicultural stories, rhythm and rhyme as literacy tools for the entire family. The Actors' Playhouse Theatre for Young Audiences presents Young King Arthur. The play created for children takes shows King Arthur as a child who soon discovers that with power come responsibilities and troubles, especially from his jealous brother Sir Kay and the evil knight Sir Ridley. With the help of Merlin the Magician and an outspoken peasant girl named Brynith, Young King Arthur discovers that real power comes not from swashbuckling and sorcery, but from the heart. May 1 & May 10

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden presents Plants and People: An Interactive Garden, Unearthing a World of Experiences for People Living with Alzheimer's. During this program early to mid-stage patients and their caregivers will be treated to lunch and an exclusive and interactive tram tour of Fairchild. The program, which is free of charge, starts at 11:30 a.m. Registration is requested one week in advance. To make reservations, call 305-667-1651, extension 3388.

May 1 – 2

Actors' Playhouse at the Miracle Theatre presents an entire weekend of theatre fun for the whole family at the 15th Annual National Children's Theatre Festival Kids Fest. The festival will feature the winning musical in the national call to competition for new children's works. There will also be many other activities geared toward children and their families. This event takes place at Actors' Playhouse Miracle Theatre, 280 Miracle Mile. For more information and event times, call 305-444-9293.

Through May 1

The Jerry Herman Ring Theatre presents Rent. Based on Puccini's classic opera La Boheme, Rent is a revolutionary rock opera that tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling to live and pay their rent in the gritty background of New York's East Village. Playing for over 12 years, Rent went on to become one of the longest running shows in Broadway history. Performances take place Wednesdays thru Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. The Ring Theatre is located at 1312 Miller Drive. May 3

The Adult Activity Center’s Book Club will meet to discuss the Book of the Month, “The Piano Teacher” by Janice Y. K. Lee. Club members gather in Room 112 at the Adult Activity Center, 624 Anastasia Avenue, from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Volunteer leader Sandy Lysinger will lead the discussion.

May 4 – 13

The Venetian Aquatic Club is looking for volunteers to help teach people how to swim. A Water Safety Instructor Aide Course will be taught by the American Red Cross Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The course will take place at Venetian Pool, 2701 De Soto Boulevard. May 5 – June 2

Learn the ancient art of Chinese Brush Painting taught by new volunteer Dorothy Cheng. Class meets Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Room 113 at the Adult Activity Center, 624 Anastasia Avenue. The fee for the session is $12. For more information, call 305-460-5609.

May 7

The Miami Symphony Orchestra presents its Romantic Series concert. Winner of the 2008 Avery Fisher Career Grant, Swiss-born American pianist Gilles Vonsattel will perform at Gusman Concert Hall, 1314 Miller Road. Vonsattel's program will consist of Brahms Piano Concerto No.1, Op.15 and Tchaikovsky Symphony No.6, Op.74. The performance takes place at 8 p.m. Tickets range in price from $15 to $60. May 8

Are you or someone you know going through foreclosure? Are you interested in learning about condo association laws? Are you wondering how to get your suspended license reinstated? Then bring your questions to the judges of the Miami-Dade Courts at an Informational Town Hall Meeting on common issues regarding condominium association, mortgage foreclosures, landlord tenant, and driving legal program. The informational session takes place on Saturday, May 8, 10 a.m. to 12 noon at the War Memorial Youth Center, 405 University Drive. General information and printed resources on these and other common legal issues will be provided for free at the meeting.

May 11

The Senior Services Division is hitting the road and taking seniors on several trips to explore South Florida with a program called Let's See South Florida. The group will visit the Everglades National Park and make a pit stop at a popular fruit stand in Homestead. The trip costs $15. The deadline to register is May 1. Through May 23

GableStage presents the Southeastern premier of The Quarrel. Based on a Yiddish story, The Quarrel by David Brandes and Joseph Telushkin tells the story of two friends, an Orthodox rabbi and a Jewish poet who has lost his faith — both Holocaust survivors. When they meet unexpectedly years later, it sparks a fierce battle of wits and a raw test of friendship faith and tolerance. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Ticket prices range from $37.50 to $45.
