Events Roundup Here is a partial list of upcoming cultural events in Coral Gables. July 7 – 29 One of South Florida's foremost and premiere historians Barry University and FIU history professor Seth H. Bramson presents the History of South Florida and the story of how we came to be. During this five-week session, Bramson will regale seniors with true stories on the area's villages, towns, and cities. The classes will take place at the Adult Activity Center Thursdays from 1β2 p.m. The fee is $12. The senior center is located at 624 Anastasia Avenue. July 7 – August 15 Actors' Playhouse presents a fresh and funny musical comedy that tackles the question we so often ask ourselves on life's roller coaster journey, βAre We There Yet?β See the typical bumps, u-turns and road blocks of life being played out on the stage. Performances take place Wednesdays through Fridays at 8 p.m., Saturdays at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. Tickets for weeknights and matinees are $42, and on Friday and Saturday evenings $50. The theatre offers a 10 percent senior discounted rate the day of performance and $15 student rush tickets 15 minutes prior to curtain with identification. July 10 – 11 Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden presents its famous International Mango Festival. This year the festival will celebrate the Mangos of India. Visit the festival to buy your hand selected mango trees and fruit, enjoy mango lectures and smoothies, view the world's largest display of mangoes, take part in the world's only mango auction and buy mango merchandise and botanical art. There will also be mango culinary demonstrations, an International Fruit Market, fun activities for kids and much more. Fairchild Garden is located at 10901 Old Cutler Road and is open from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Admission costs $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and $10 for children ages 6 - 17. For more information, click here. July 11 The Village of Merrick Park is celebrating the Doggie Days of Summer with a special Pooch-A-Palooza event series. On July 11 and during all remaining Sundays of the month, Village of Merrick Park will cater to our four-legged friends. With any $25 purchase at the center, receive a framed photograph of your dog. Stores will have special treats for the dogs and other in-store promotions. Bring your dogs to Village of Merrick Park on July 11, 18 and 25 from 2β6 p.m. to participate in the events. For more information, click here. July 12 The Adult Activity Center's Book Club meets once a month to go over the Book of the Month and decide what book they will read next. Those wanting to participate can gather in Room 112 at the senior center, 624 Anastasia Avenue, from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. Volunteer leader Sandy Lysinger will lead the discussion. July 15 The Coral Gables Congregational Church presents the 2010 Summer Concert Series. The season continues with Awadagin Pratt. The exceptional pianist was the first African-American classical instrumentalist to win first prize at the prestigious Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1992. Pratt is another favorite at the summer concert series. The concert takes place at Coral Gables Congregational Church, 3010 De Soto Boulevard, at 8 p.m. Tickets cost $25 for general seating or $40 for seating within the first eight rows. This performance will take the audience back to France in the 18th century where Louis Couperin's compositions for King Louis XIV were known for their breathtaking beauty typifying the art of the French golden age. July 16 The Italy-America Chamber of Commerce presents Italian Cooking Show: A Journey Through Regional Culinary Traditions. This event is the third in a series of four which puts two top chefs from renowned local Italian restaurants against each other in a culinary battle before an audience eager to learn the various cooking methods used in preparing some of Italy's most distinctive dishes. Audience members will then vote for their favorite dish. This event takes place at 6:30 p.m. at MiaCucina, 105 Miracle Mile. A reception will immediately follow the cooking demonstration until 9:30 pm. Admission for the cooking class and festival is $45, and $10 for just the festival. Through July 18 GableStage at the Biltmore Hotel presents the southeastern premiere of Speech and Debate by Stephen Karam. This fiercely funny comedy with music asks: what do a high school debate team, predators in cyberspace and a musical version of Arthur Miller's The Crucible have in common? The answer: three teenagers who are wrestling with sex, lies and YouTube videos in this off-Broadway comic hit. Performances take place Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8 p.m. and Sundays at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. On Thursdays and Sunday nights, tickets cost $37.50, Friday nights and Sunday matinees cost $42.50, and tickets for performances on Saturdays costs $45. July 19 The Adult Activity Center is hosting its monthly Lunch and Lecture program. The event consists of a complimentary lunch followed by a discussion with a guest speaker. This month the discussion will center around Stay at Home Care Options. The discussion will be headed by Marilyn Bruno, Ph.D. and SHINE volunteer. Olson and based on the children's books by Astrid Lindgren, this funny musical follows the life of the unforgettable little girl with the freckled face and red pig tales as she struggles to find her place in the world.
